How we tested it
“In March 1942, a lighthouse keeper off the Scottish coast logged the same sentence three nights in a row: 'The light is fine. Something else is wrong.' On the fourth night, the log stops. This is the story investigators pieced together from what he left behind, and the one detail none of them could explain.”
We ran our fixed 58-word lighthouse script through the default English narrator at default settings. ElevenLabs produced the most natural read in the index: correct emphasis on the logged sentence, a believable pause before the final line, no robotic vowel stretching. The same script on the free tier sounds identical, the difference is purely what the license lets you do with it.
Watermark & licensing, the part that decides monetization
Why the free plan fails: No commercial license on free, attribution to elevenlabs.io required
Watermark
There is no audible watermark on free-tier audio, which is exactly why this one catches people. The file sounds clean, the export works everywhere, and nothing warns you that the license underneath says non-commercial. The trap is invisible.
License
The free tier grants a non-commercial license and requires visible attribution to elevenlabs.io. A monetized YouTube video is commercial use by definition, ads, memberships, sponsorships all count. Starter ($6/mo) switches you to a commercial license and drops the attribution requirement, which is why we treat it as the real entry price.
Free-tier output may be used for non-commercial purposes only, and requires attribution to elevenlabs.io.

FAQ
Can I use ElevenLabs' free plan on a monetized YouTube channel?
No. Monetized videos are commercial use, and the free tier's license is non-commercial with mandatory attribution. The fix costs $6/mo.
Will YouTube detect free-tier ElevenLabs audio?
Detection isn't the point. There's no Content ID claim to dodge, the risk is a license breach: ElevenLabs can act on it, and a competitor or viewer can report it. Risking a channel to save $6 is a bad trade.
Is the $6 Starter plan enough for a faceless channel?
Roughly 30 minutes of audio per month, about 3–4 long-form videos or 20+ Shorts. Most channels we run fit inside it; script-heavy daily uploaders should budget for Creator.
Do I still need to credit ElevenLabs on paid plans?
No. The attribution requirement applies to the free tier only.
